EP07 - Active Protection (you can actually parry a bomb)
Explore how active protection systems enable tanks to parry incoming missiles and RPGs with outgoing projectiles. Learn the radar detection, fire control computing, and kinetic interceptor physics behind systems like Trophy and Arena.

It's official. The meta is broken. The devs are idiots.
Look at this! One rocket! One lucky shot from a level-one grunt, and my entire late-game investment is deleted!
Weapons are becoming more and more OP! Armor is useless!
That's it. I'm done with heavy tanks. Armor is just a giant, slow target. From now on, it's a stealth and speed meta. Glass cannons only.
"Armor is useless."
A stunningly unimaginative conclusion.
It's not unimaginative! It's just math! If the enemy's damage-per-second out-scales my armor's hit-points, the armor is obsolete!
Your conclusion is correct. Your premise is wrong.
You assume the purpose of armor is to absorb damage.
That is a deeply primitive way of thinking. Log off. Welcome to the Kinetics Void.
But then, physics cheated.
Engineers weaponized chemistry to create a force that thick steel could not stop.
This is a Shaped Charge. It doesn't use kinetic energy. It doesn't punch through armor.
It chemically melts it.
Upon impact, a perfectly shaped cone of explosives detonates, focusing all of its energy onto a soft copper liner.
It... it’s a plasma blowtorch.
It bypasses the concept of "armor HP" entirely. It's a chemistry exploit.
Okay, see?! You just proved my point! Armor is useless!
A 75-point peasant just mission-killed my 1,000-point tank! So the only solution is to be faster so he can't hit me!
So your solution is to make the tank out of paper, so a machine gun can kill it instead?
No. When the physics of the weapon changes, the physics of the defense must also change.
The problem is not the armor. The problem is the event.
You are trying to solve the problem after the rocket has already hit you. A professional engineer solves the problem in the 0.2 seconds before the rocket hits you.
In the 0.2 seconds before? How? Do you build a magic psychic shield?
Yes.
A magic psychic shield made of radar, calculus, and a very angry shotgun.
This is the Israeli Trophy Active Protection System (APS).
It is not armor. It is a close-range, fully autonomous kill-zone.
Step One: Detection.
These are not armor plates. They are advanced Doppler radar arrays. They continuously scan a 360-degree bubble around the tank.
Step Two: Computation.
The onboard computer instantly calculates the threat's velocity, trajectory, and exact point of impact. It asks one question: "Is this threat going to hit me?"
The entire process—detection, classification, calculation—takes less than a tenth of a second.
If the answer is "yes," it proceeds to Step Three.
Interception.
The RPG rocket is now just five feet from the tank. It is a guaranteed hit. The shaped charge is armed.
But look where it detonates.
The hit was nullified. The armor never had to do its job.
It... it shot the bullet.
It didn't tank the hit. It shot the bullet out of the air.
Speed replaces Mass.
Why spend millions on developing thicker, heavier, exotic armor when you can just build a faster, smarter bullet to kill the bullet?
The best armor is not being there when the bullet arrives.
And the Trophy system ensures that, for that rocket, the tank was never truly there. It created a pocket of space-time where the threat was deleted before it could land.
Armor is not useless, Shez. You just have to expand your definition of what "armor" is.
It’s not just a passive slab of metal. It is an active, violent, autonomous bubble of defensive mathematics.
I wasn't losing because armor is useless.
I was losing because my armor was stupid.
Give me the shotgun shield.
YES! Denied!
A smart commander doesn't fear the enemy's weapon.
