EP03 - Radiation Decay (The Biological Bullet)

That's what watches do, Shez.
No! The *Geiger Counter* is ticking! This watch is radioactive! Radium-226!
It's a nuclear bomb on a strap! When does it explode?
It's not a bomb. It's a **Popcorn Machine**.
It releases energy slowly... over 1,600 years.
Okay, slow energy. But is it killing me? Right now?
How does the energy actually *hurt* a person? Does it burn? Does it poison?
It's not poison. It's **Ballistics**.
Let's go to the lab.
Your body is made of cells. Inside every cell is this. DNA.
Think of it as the **Operating System** code.
This watch emits **Alpha Particles**.
They are heavy. Like bowling balls.
It bounced off!
Alpha is huge. It interacts with air and skin immediately. It has **Low Penetration**.
As long as the watch is on the *outside*, you are safe.
But what if you **Eat** it?
Why would I eat a watch?
The **Radium Girls** did. They licked the paint brushes to make them pointy.
Radium mimics Calcium chemically. Your body thinks it's bone food.
It builds the Radium *into your jawbone*.
Now the Bowling Ball is inside the house.
There is no dead skin to stop it. It hits the living cells. Point blank.
The alpha particle causes a **Double Strand Break**.
This is **High LET (Linear Energy Transfer)** damage. It acts like a shotgun blast.
The cell panics. It mis-repairs the code (mutation).
Result: **Bone Cancer** or **Necrosis** (The jaw falls off).
Okay. Do not eat the watch. Got it.
Next projectile: **Beta Decay ()**.
That looks faster.
It's an **Electron**. A bullet.
Beta has medium penetration. It can pass through dead skin. But can be deflected by aluminum.
If you hold a strong Beta source, it causes **Beta Burns**. Like a sunburn, but deeper.
A beta particle causes a **Single Strand Break**.
Your body can usually fix this easily using the other rail as a template.
So how do I stop it?
Use **Plastic**.
Plastic?
If you use Lead (Heavy metal), the fast electron hits the lead and creates X-Rays (Bremsstrahlung).
Plastic slows it down gently.
Finally: **Gamma Decay ()**.
A laser?
A High-Energy Photon. No mass. Pure speed. The Sniper.
It missed me!
Most of them do. That's the problem. They are hard to catch.
Gamma causes **Indirect Action**.
The Gamma ray turns your own water into poison. Here's how:
The Free Radical attacks the DNA.
This causes random damage all over your body. Bone marrow. Stomach lining.
How do we stop the sniper?
**Density**. Lead. Concrete. Depleted Uranium.
You need lots of mass to catch the photon.
Alpha: Bowling Ball. Stopped by skin. Deadly if eaten.
Beta: Bullet. Stopped by plastic. Burns skin.
Gamma: Sniper. Stopped by Lead. Damages whole body via water.
Is there anything else? A fourth one?
The **Neutron**.
The iron became radioactive?!
Neutrons cause **Activation**.
Neutrons make other things radioactive. They turn your own blood into sodium-24.
What stops a Neutron? Lead?
No. Lead does nothing. The neutron bounces off heavy atoms like a ping pong ball.
You need light atoms to absorb the impact. Hydrogen.
Compounds like: Water. Wax. Polyethylene.
That's why nuclear reactors are submerged in pools.
That's a lot of ways to die.
It's just energy transfer.
Fire burns you with heat (infrared photons). Gamma burns you with high-energy photons. Same physics, different frequency.
The key is **Dose**.
Standing next to a fire warms you. Standing in it kills you.
This watch gives you 1 millirem. A CT scan gives you 1,000. Acute death is 400,000.
So... don't eat it. Don't sleep with it under my pillow.
And don't open the case. Keep the Radon gas inside.
Okay. DNA smashing. Mutation. Got it.
So when does this watch stop being a threat?
Now we talk about **Half-Life**.
Start: 100% Radium.
1,600 Years: 50% Radium.
3,200 Years: 25% Radium.
It never stops?
Well, it approaches zero asymptotically.
In a billion years, there will still be *one* atom left, waiting to pop.
Why 1,600 years? Why not 10 minutes?
Because of **Quantum Tunneling**.
The particle doesn't have enough energy to jump the wall.
But because it's a quantum wave, it can sometimes "ghost" through it.
For Radium, the probability is low. It takes 1,600 years to get lucky.
For Polonium-214, the probability is high. It takes 0.0001 seconds.
Nature is terrifying. Invisible bullets and probability walls.
It's just energy seeking stability.
