Season 1
EP03 - The Leviathan
Explore Hobbes's Leviathan and the state monopoly on legitimate violence. Learn how centralizing force under a sovereign prevents the chaos of all-against-all and why taxation and protection are economically identical.
That’s it. No more social contracts. We are going back to the old ways.
Someone scammed you out of your legendary loot in your MMO again?
He stole my +10 Flaming Sword of Righteousness! He tricked me in a trade window!
I have his IP address! I know where he lives! I am going to drive there and break his keyboard! It is my moral right to punish him!
Your "moral right" to punish him is exactly what destroys civilizations, Shez.
Why?! If I call the game mods, they’ll just ban him for three days. If I call the police, they’ll laugh at me!
If someone hurts me, why shouldn't I be allowed to hurt them back? Karma is a bitch.
Karma is a theory. Until you realize human beings are incapable of doing math.
This man stole your property. Under the laws of personal justice, you have the right to retaliate. Go ahead. Balance the equation.
Take that, twerp! The equation is balanced!
I got my sword back, he learned his lesson, and the universe is at peace.
The universe is at peace according to your math. But justice is entirely subjective.
You hit my little brother! He took your stupid toy, and you gave him a concussion! That’s disproportionate!
I will avenge you!
Ow! Hey! I was just getting my stuff back!
This is the fatal flaw of decentralized violence: Asymmetric Assessment of Debt.
You think your club strike was a 1:1 repayment for the theft. The brother thinks your strike was an unprovoked escalation.
No one ever believes the punishment they receive is fair. Therefore, every act of "justice" is a new unprovoked crime that demands retaliation.
Unprovoked crime?! I’ll show him unprovoked! GUILDMATES, ASSEMBLE!
Come forth, my army of simps! We are going to settle the score!
And here we have the inevitable result of personal justice. The Blood Feud.
If individuals have the right to execute violence, violence never stops.
Every punch thrown to "settle the score" simply creates a new score to settle for the other guy's cousin.
But... wait! Who’s winning? When does it end?
It doesn't.
It is a perpetual motion machine fueled by human pride. It will burn down the entire world over a single stolen sword.
Make them stop! Tell them they’re even!
They won't listen to me. I don't have a bigger club than them.
In 1651, a man named Thomas Hobbes wrote a book about this exact nightmare. He called the natural state of man a "war of all against all."
To stop the infinite feedback loop of revenge, humanity had to invent a monster.
Enter the State.
Max Weber defined the State as the entity that holds a Monopoly on the Legitimate Use of Physical Force.
ALL VIOLENCE IS NOW ILLEGAL. ONLY I MAY STRIKE.
Neither of you are allowed to execute justice anymore. You surrender your right to violence to ME.
But he stole my sword! He started it! I am the victim! Let me at him!
YOU ARE IRRELEVANT. THE CRIME IS NO LONGER AGAINST YOU. IT IS AGAINST THE PEACE.
The Leviathan doesn't punish the thief because it feels bad for you. It punishes the thief because the thief broke the Leviathan's rules.
PENALTY APPLIED. DEBT TO SOCIETY SETTLED.
Hey! You can't do that! I'll smash you!
You fool. How dare you stand up against a monopoly?
OBSTRUCTION NOTED. PENALTY APPLIED.
The State is so powerful that retaliation is mathematically impossible. You cannot feud with the Leviathan. It has all the guns.
And because the Thief's family knows they can't fight the State... the feedback loop of violence is instantly broken. The blood feud ends today.
It took away my agency. It didn't even ask how I felt. It just treated us both like numbers.
That is the price of civilization.
We trade our emotional satisfaction, our personal vengeance, and our right to swing the bat... so we dont get murdered by our neighbors.
So... if I drove to that scammer's house and smashed his keyboard...
The State would not care that he stole your digital sword. The State would see an unauthorized use of physical violence and punish you.
I hate the math of peace. It’s so bureaucratic. I'll report him to the mods.
EP02 - The Surplus Trap
Discover how agriculture invented war by creating the first surplus worth stealing. Learn the economic logic behind organized violence and why the invention of the surplus destroyed mobility and invented the state.
EP04 - The Knight (CAPEX)
Understand why medieval knights represent the peak of military CAPEX investment. Learn how expensive heavy cavalry shaped feudal economics, social hierarchy, and why the knight meta collapsed under gunpowder.
