EP03 - The Best Melee Weapon: Spear

Understand why the spear dominated melee combat for millennia across every civilization. Learn the geometry and formation physics that make reach and massed infantry the unbeatable melee meta.

Get over here! Stop running away and fight me! Parry this, you coward!
This is so annoying! This guy has zero combos! All he does is poke, poke, poke!
That is such a cheap, no-skill tactic! Knives and swords look cooler and faster! That spear is for losers who can't fight!
You lost because your opponent understood geometry. Forget about flashy combos. A fight is not a fashion contest.
It's not a fashion contest! My character is agile! He's nimble! I should be able to run circles around that slow, boring stick-man!
Fine. Let's have a showdown. Your game, your rules. Pick your weapon.
I'll take the spear.
I'll take the "Dragon Dagger". Speed. Agility. Skill.
You're going down, stick-woman.
She's not even moving! She's too slow! I've got this!
But... I haven't even attacked yet...
How... what just happened? You didn't even do a move!
This is my Danger Zone. If you are inside this circle, I can kill you.
Now show me your attack range.
Oh.
To use your weapons, you have to run through six feet of my Danger Zone first. My weapon, however, is already waiting for you at the front door.
Fine! I won't charge in a straight line! I'm faster than you! I can dodge!
Useless! Useless! Useless! Your speed is irrelevant if you can't get past the gate.
Stop that! It's not fair!
Ha! See? You're too slow to even...
I don't need to commit to a big swing. My attacks are low-risk, low-energy, and impossible for you to punish. The entire fight happens on my terms.
This is OP. It's a completely OP melee weapon.
It's not OP. It's just the most efficient piece of geometry ever invented. You are still thinking about distance. But you're still missing the most important variable.
Let's talk about the clock.
From this moment, you have to cover six feet of empty space just to get into your own effective range. At a full sprint, that takes, let's say, one full second.
In that one second, my brain processes your charge, calculates your trajectory, and aims my weapon.
Reach isn't just distance. Reach is time.
My weapon gives me an entire second of free time to react to your decision.
You have to make a choice, run into my spear, and die... all before you are even physically capable of swinging your own sword.
Time... He had more time than me...
The spear player wasn't being cheap...he was just attacking efficiently.
For three hundred thousand years, the spear was the undisputed king of the melee for one reason. "How do I beat him without letting him touch me?"
Turns out, the best weapon we had so far is a sharp edge on a cheap stick. All the fancy swords we had got demoted to decorations at some point.
In games, combos and flashy moves are exciting. But in practical combat, it is about simple, low-risk, hard to punish defense and offenses.
