EP07 - Pain & “Enhanced Interrogation”

Explore the legal, ethical, and practical failures of enhanced interrogation and torture. Learn why coerced intelligence is unreliable, how the UN Convention Against Torture defines the law, and what actually works.

Kurumi, I've reviewed the proposals for handling corporate espionage and physical security threats. This private contractor guarantees results! They use "Enhanced Interrogation"!
If we push them into an extreme situation with this scary "Unforgivable Curse" spell, they have no choice but to tell the truth!
WTF, Shez. You need Jesus.
What?! It's a necessary evil! In extreme situations, when you absolutely need the truth, you have to squeeze the system until the data falls out.
"Squeeze the system?" Your evil wizard arc is making you misunderstand behavioral economics and neurobiology. You think shouting "Crucio" is a master decryption key?
Under normal, non-coercive conditions, a human's objective function might be to protect their allies or remain silent. It is a stable, encrypted database.
When you apply extreme physical or psychological duress, you shatter their executive function. The brain's primitive survival mechanics take absolute control.
The captive no longer care about truth, loyalty, or deception. They care entirely about minimizing immediate pain.
Right! That's the point! They want the pain to stop, so they give up the encrypted data to make you stop hurting them!
No, Shez. They do not give you the truth. They give you whatever output they calculate will satisfy the interrogator.
Coercive dark-magic pressure turns a human desperate. Its a data mining technique where you ask for a password, and the system just spits a billion random strings of garbage text to make the caster stop.
Garbage text? But... they're talking! "Enhanced Interrogation produces voluminous intelligence!"
"Voluminous." Yes. Volume is easy. Accuracy is hard. By applying coercive pressure, you have intentionally destroyed your own Signal-to-Noise ratio.
A false positive is infinitely more dangerous than silence.
The coerced subject feeds you fifty fabricated safehouses to buy themselves twelve hours of relief from the pressure. You must now deploy your finite operational resources to investigate fifty empty rooms.
You waste millions of dollars, misallocate your personnel, and chase ghosts. You did not extract intelligence. You just DDoSed your own threat-response pipeline.
A DDoS attack on our own decision-making... But wait! Historically, hasn't it worked? What about all those high-profile government programs?
Let us check the post-mortems the Ministry of Magic is kind enough to declassify.
The report concluded coercive methods produced almost exclusively noise. The high-value data consistently came from standard, non-coercive rapport-building methods.
Okay, fine! The data is messy! But it's about deterrence!
If we are hardcore dark wizards, it intimidates the enemy! It shows them we mean business and they shouldn't mess with us.
You have just transitioned from a tactical data error to a catastrophic strategic suicide.
Consider the game theory of warfare and conflict. Your goal is to isolate and neutralize a finite number of hostile actors.
Humans possess a deeply hardwired, biological response to perceived systemic injustice and cruelty.
Every publicized act of "Dark-Magic Coercion" acts as a massive, high-yield recruitment beacon for the opposing force.
You radicalize the neutral population. You harden the resolve of the existing resistance. You hand their propagandists a flawlessly crafted, undeniable weapon.
By trying to intimidate them, you converted a finite, containable tactical problem into a self-replenishing, infinite strategic nightmare.
It's an infinite loop of self-harm. We coerce them with fear, we get garbage data, we waste our time, and in return, they get a thousand new recruits who hate us.
It gets worse, Shez. The final casualty of coercive dark-magic tactics is your own institutional operating system.
Once an organization normalizes coercive abuse, a deadly institutional corruption loop begins.
To justify the horrific moral and legal costs, the organization must begin lying to the public, to its oversight committees, and eventually, to itself.
They must pretend the garbage data is valuable to avoid admitting they ran a cursed clown-show for nothing.
Internal trust dissolves. External legitimacy evaporates. The organization becomes obsessed with covering its own tracks rather than actually neutralizing threats.
That is the seductive lie of the "Necessary Evil." It appeals to the lazy assumption that cruelty correlates with effectiveness.
But the hard engineering reality is that it is a high-cost, low-reliability method that does infinitely more damage to the user than the victim.
So, how do we actually find the mole? They are not playing nice! We can't just let them walk over us!
We do the actual work. We monitor the network constraints. We analyze the metadata. We build behavioral rapport. We rely on verified, low-noise signals.
Truth is a delicate signal. If you hit the receiver with a hammer, you will only ever hear static.
