EP04 - Thermobaric Weapons (how to kill a rat in a box)
Discover the physics of thermobaric fuel-air explosives and how they kill in enclosed spaces. Learn why vacuum bombs are devastating against bunkers and fortifications by consuming oxygen rather than just creating blast.
I hate urban maps!
Bullets can't hit! There’s zero line of sight! Every time I get an angle, they just duck behind a staircase or a reinforced pillar!
Grenades just bounce into useless corners! Artillery gets blocked by the roofs! My opponents aren't fighting, they’re just hiding like rats in a maze!
You’re frustrated because you’re trying to solve a fluid dynamics problem using ray-tracing logic.
I’m frustrated because I’m playing an FPS and they’re playing hide-and-seek!
How am I supposed to secure a kill when the map itself is physically shielding their hitboxes?!
Your grenade is a point-source emitter. It detonates, expanding a steel casing into high-velocity shrapnel.
Shrapnel is governed by linear geometry. It travels in straight lines.
If the rat is standing in the shadow, the rat is safe. The wall intercepts 100% of the mechanical energy.
Exactly! That’s my point! The map is just an infinite series of kinetic shadows!
This is a Fuel-Air Explosive. A Thermobaric weapon. It is almost 100% pure fuel.
So it’s just a bigger explosion? That doesn't solve the wall problem.
It doesn't hit the wall, Shez. It bypasses it entirely.
A thermobaric weapon doesn't explode all at once. It executes a two-stage process.
Stage one: The burster charge. It scatters a cloud of microscopic fuel droplets into the air.
Notice the physics. It is no longer a projectile. It is a gas.
It flows through open doorways. It pours down ventilation shafts. It seeps around 90-degree corners.
It’s... filling the entire volume of the room.
Yes. The wall is irrelevant to a gas. The "Kinetic Shadow" has been flooded.
The fuel uses the ambient oxygen in the room as its oxidizer. The environment itself becomes part of the weapon.
And then, a fraction of a second later...
FWOOOOOSH-THUMP!
Whoa... it didn't just explode in the center. The entire room became the explosion.
Exactly. But the fire is secondary. The true lethality is the pressure wave.
A standard explosion creates a sharp, fast shockwave that dissipates quickly.
A thermobaric detonation creates a massive, sustained "Overpressure" wave that lasts longer.
Because the explosive cloud already filled the space, the shockwave doesn't originate from a single point. It originates from everywhere.
The pressure wave turns corners. It behaves like a liquid hammer.
But... the wall didn't break. How does it kill him if the wall is still there?
Your biology requires a delicate equilibrium of internal and external atmospheric pressure.
You can hide your flesh from flying metal. But you cannot hide your internal organs from a massive, instantaneous spike in ambient air pressure.
The overpressure wave enters through your mouth, your nose, and your sinuses. It crushes your lungs and internal organs.
This is called Primary Blast Barotrauma.
The detonation burns all the available oxygen in the immediate area. The rapidly expanding gases then cool and contract.
This creates a massive, violent vacuum effect. A negative pressure wave.
Your lungs, which were just crushed, are now expanded. The soft tissues are shredded. You drown in your own fluids.
Remember when you said you hated these walls? That they were shielding your enemy?
In a thermobaric strike, a wall is not a shield. It is a container.
An enclosed space—a bunker, a cave, a hallway—prevents the pressure wave from dissipating. The walls reflect and amplify the shockwave, bouncing the overpressure back and forth.
The very geometry the "rat" used to hide from your bullets is the exact mechanism that guarantees their death.
The tighter the maze, the more lethal the vacuum.
In Asymmetric Warfare, there are no duels. There are only physics exploits.
If the enemy hides in a box, you don't try to break the box. You just weaponize the air inside it.
"I will just hide myself in a box"
"...so you have chosen death"
